Ministry of Science and Higher Education has unexpectedly introduced significant changes to the admission requirements for international applicants. If you plan to apply to a Polish university, you must now:

  • submit educational documents recognized by the Director of the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA),
  • demonstrate proficiency in the language of instruction at a minimum of B2 level,
  • pass entrance exams or attend an interview.

The proportion of international students at any higher education institution may not exceed 50% of the total student body. If the number of foreign students exceeds this threshold, the university will be required to suspend international admissions until the proportion falls below 50%.

Important: These changes DO NOT APPLY to the following:

  • foreign nationals who are citizens of the European Union applying on the basis of educational documents issued in EU, OECD, or EFTA–EEA countries (for example, if you hold German citizenship and a German high school diploma, you only need to take the entrance exams – no additional document recognition is required);

  • foreign nationals applying on the basis of a Polish secondary school-leaving certificate (Polish matura). So, if you are, for instance, a Ukrainian citizen who has passed the Polish matura (congratulations!), you can simply apply for admission.

The changes apply to candidates who simultaneously:

  • do not hold citizenship of any EU country, and
  • are applying on the basis of educational documents obtained outside Poland.

The new rules also apply to EU citizens who hold a matura (or another secondary school-leaving certificate) obtained outside the EU.
