16:00 Panel Discussion: How to Talk About Facts in the Age of Fakes

Today’s discourse around migration – not only in Poland – is plagued by an unprecedented level of disinformation. Fake news takes on a life of its own, and fact-checking is no longer a natural first instinct. Instead, it’s become a hobby for the most dedicated civic activists or the job of investigative journalists. We live in a world where narratives often seem more powerful than facts, and reliable knowledge no longer feels appealing.

The narrative of fear, aggression, and hostility is like a dangerous force of nature. Disinformation can have tragic consequences. Young people are especially vulnerable – in Poland, youth are among the most hostile toward people with migration experience. Nowhere else in Europe is the situation quite so severe. Let’s talk about the roots and consequences of this hostile narrative, the role of algorithms, artificial intelligence, and disinformation — and why it’s time to start taking all of this very seriously.
